Since then I have insulated the majority of the van thoroughly with can foam and high density foam board. All structural members in the walls and ceiling were filled with foam.
The walls have a layer of 2" foam cut around the structural members, can foamed edges/gaps shaved flat followed by a layer of 1.5" foam. The ceiling has one layer of 2" foam cut to fit between structural members and can foamed edges/gaps shaved flat. It was a design goal to not only highly insulate the space but to also smooth and flatten the interior surfaces in preparation for interior finish cladding. The interior wall structural members were a nightmare, all protruding different dimensions, leaving no consistant plane to attach interior cladding to.
The insulated coolant lines running to the back of the van have been connected to a radiant heated floor in the rear area of the van. The radiant floor consists of 1" of high density foam board glued to floor followed by a glued layer of 5/8" sheetrock followed by a middle layer containing approx 120' of 1/2" PEX radiant heating line with aluminum heat diffuser plates bedded in a layer of 5/8" sheetrock and finally topped with a third and final layer of 5/8" sheetrock. The end result is one comfy floor. It makes a BIG differance. Driving the van at highway speeds for 20 miles results in a very warm floor that slowly lets off heat for hours. It really makes a differance all the way around. You don't lose the majority of your heat every time you open the door, the interior temperature is moderated, tempered. The vehicle isn't freezing cold after losing all your hot air or a matter of minutes after turning the heater off. The heated floor can be turned on and off via the ball valves pictured. Both myself and the friend that helped me install the floor have professionally installed radiant heating systems, we both agreed it is a unique project. It works like a charm.
The inverter is currently disconnected, wiring runs from behind the driver's seat to the engine compartment battery. This is a nice inverter, sells for over $1000. I have never used it, the deep cycle battery that came with the initial set up wouldn't take a charge, the inverter was disconnected during the floor project and has never been reconnected.
There are velcro affixed insulated covers for all windows and a service manual.
The van needs a new winshield (approx $350) and the brakes done. The driver's door interior pannel is missing and the drivers door handle works but is loose. I am currently tinkering with it. The service air bags and tire pressure indicators have been on since I bought the van.
The van runs great. It had a new computer intalled 8 or 9 months ago. Nice tires about a year ago, truck weight tires. Fresh oil change and fluids check.
This would be a great van for someone looking to build out a camper van. A lot of work has gone into the insulation job and floor, work well worth it but not the funnest work. I was going to clad the inside with flat stock white metal from Bridger Steel, build a deck over the wheel wells with drawers underneath, hook the inverter back up with a couple deep cycle batteries, maybe some solar pannels on the roof and install a Propex propane heater.
