Vehicle Description
I have been evicted from my shop for falling behind on rent during the pandemic. No leniency: "out, out and never darken our driveway again." I was going to pull the head and get to the bottom of this but I have nowhere to do it. I sort of hate to send it to Pick n Pull but that might happen.
Has 362K on the odo. Ran really sweet until all of this. Smooth, good power, gets 25mpg on the highway with 5 passengers, 3 enjoying that limo style rear legroom. The steering needs some tightening, and the tranny leaks. I understand there is a good product for that, learned of it after the breakdown.
The history: Oct. '19, just south of Eugene, OR I was alerted to overheating in progress by the coolant tank warning light blinking on. I pulled over and shut it off immediately, opened the hood to huge clouds of steam. At least it wasn't black smoke. The radiator had pulled itself apart. I had it trucked back to Redwood City at a cost of $600, put in an aluminum radiator and it ran well as if nothing had happened until late January.
There is right side body damage. The impact to the rear left door (I didn't see it happen, parking lot perhaps) is miraculously confined to the door. I happened to see that door on an SEL at Dorris Auto Wreckers last week in pristine shape. Rt. front quarter panel also, light yellow.
The front seats are of a different color, the second set (at least) that was worn out, and in bad shape. At least they're post '86 seats, a better seat than the S class through 1985. I have some leather skins in the correct color from an '83 300SD (one is pictured). They look different than for this model year, but they are leather and in great shape, and they will fit.
The starter is two years old, the motor mounts and motor mount shocks are about 18 months old. The front rotor and discs 2 years old. Both shifter bushings replaced in late 2017. In July '17 I replaced the O-rings and copper sealing washers on the injection pump. Apparently it's a regular maintenance issue, at least once if the car lasts that long.
Many speculate that the OM603 6 cyl could last as long as the OM617 5 cylinder, but probably a little more maintenace and repair would be needed.
Make me an offer. I see the injecter pumps advertised in the $1000 range. Taking it off is a job. I removed one from a totaled rear ender 350SD at Pick n Pull last summer.
