The cars created a sensation at the LA event and Woody was unexpectedly inundated with order inquiries. The Willys Motors Corporation got wind of the two sports cars and had one flown to their factory headquarters in Toledo, Ohio. They immediately began negotiations with Woodill to produce the exciting sports car for Willys. However, Kaiser-Frazer Motors purchased Willys and killed the idea in favor of their own little sports car... the Kaiser Darrin. Woody Woodill soldiered on and eventually switched to Ford components. According to the builder of the fiberglass bodies, Bill Tritt, just 90 Woodill Wildfires were built.
A few Woodill Wildfires were factory built and others were home-built Specials. Some Wildfires were built to go racing. According to Geoff Hacker of Forgotten Fiberglass, only 15 Woodill Wildfires are known survivors today. Woodill Wildfires were popular in several movies of the 1950s. In three different films... Tony Curtis raced one, Danny Kaye stole one, and Dorothy Malone drove one well enough to win an Academy Award.
The 1955 Woodill Wildfire offered here was originally owned by Larry Frank in California from 1955 to 2013. In the early 1970s Mr. Frank modified his Wildfire to accept several Chevrolet Corvette components including a 396V8. In addition, Mr. Frank built a custom frame using the independent rear suspension of a 1963 Corvette with a later Chevrolet front end suspension. He added Corvette brake drums at the rear with disc brakes up front. The car has power steering, power brakes and an automatic transmission with a brand new TCI shifter. The Woodill was recently restored by Undiscovered Classics of Tampa, Florida, receiving a fully rewired electrical system, new paint, new interior, new gauges, new Halibrand style wheels with new tires all the way around. An upgraded 4-row aluminum radiator with an electric fan was added. The car is extremely fast, good looking, rare & historic and fun to drive.
