This 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner Retractable "Hideaway Hardtop" / Hardtop Convertible has had a frame-off restoration started. It is powered by a 312 cubic inch Y-block V8 (rebuilt) paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. The chassis and body were lovingly and meticulously restored by an elderly gentleman who was an aircraft mechanic, but he unfortunately was unable to complete the project due to health issues. All major metalwork has been completed, including replacement of floor pans, lower rear quarters, etc. Bodywork was completed with precision measurements and is now ready for final paint prep and paint.
Substantially all parts are present, including top motors, switches and other mechanisms unique to this model. Exterior and interior trim is also present. Front (power) seat and rear seat are present (will require reupholstery). Records of purchases, technical data and manuals are also included, including previous registration and ownership information. All glass is included except the windshield which was broken in transport, but this can be easily sourced as it is the same all Fairlanes of the era. This project is offered with a clean Texas title and provides a unique opportunity to complete a solid build. These Skyliners are often badly rusted.
This particular car (VIN D7RW1900866) was originally delivered (per the data plate) as follows:
51A E BE 20F B 2 — 1957 Fairlane; Colonial White w Black Air Weave Vinyl. It was produced on 20 June 1957, was equipped with a Fordomatic Transmission and a 3.51:1 rear end.
VIN Number indicates the following: 312 cu. in. engine (245 hp); Produced in San Jose, CA, Hideaway / Retractable body style #9866 car off the line.
The car was obtained by the previous owner in California in 2001 after which he began the restoration project. He also procured a continental kit from Jerry's Classic Cars & Parts (who focuses on Skyliner restorations) and added it to the car.
In addition to the engine rebuild, the car has new whitewall tires, accessories such as power steering pump, distributor, fuel sending unit have been rebuilt/replaced, new gas tank, etc.
The 312 Y-block has been rebuilt with a performance cam, lifters, etc.
New radial whitewall radial tires in size 215/75R14 are mounted on 14″ wheels; classic turbine-style ford hubcaps are included. The rear wheels are complemented by fender skirts. Braking is handled by four-wheel drums.
The original power bench seat and rear seats are included but will need to be re-upholstered.
Also included are are full wiring, motors and switches for power windows.
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION

Original 312 V8 Y-Block, 3-Speed Automatic.

Paint & Body: The uniqueness and classic lines of the 1957 Skyliner can't be beat. The car was originally colonial white, but has now been fully stripped, all major metal repairs done and is ready to paint. Wheel skirts are included. Majority of chrome is in good shape with minor pitting. Substantially all parts are included.

Interior: Original dash and gages are available with a new digital set of gauges also available. Seat and door upholstery must be replaced. Carpet is missing. Power bench seat is included.

Glass / Windows / Doors: All glass is included with the exception of the front windshield.

Trunk: Trunk is original, no rust. Original spare tire location in trunk in addition to continental kit and spare. Luggage box (very difficult to find) is also included.

Undercarriage: Frame and running gear restored, no rust. Very straight and solid.

Wheels / Tires: Wheels are restored original. Tires have been updated with new modern Radial 215/75R14 wide whitewall tires. Hubcaps are in good condition.

Drivetrain: Engine is period-correct, believed to be the original 312 V-8 OHV Y-Block Engine with 245 hp. 3-Speed Automatic transmission. An engine dress up kit with Thunderbird valve covers is included. Thunderbird-branded engines were a high-end option for Ford vehicles of the era.

Exhaust: A new twin exhaust has been installed - including resonators at the continental kit.

Lights / Electrical: The complete electrical system is believed to be included. Some wiring harnesses appear to be new. Retractable switches, motors and wiring harnesses are included.

Brakes: 4-wheel drum brakes have been rebuilt.

Power Options: power seats, power steering, power windows

Convertible Top: Retractable hardtop is included along with controls, motors, switches and wiring harnesses. Rear of top (susceptible to rusting) has been rebuilt and strengthened.

This unique Skyliner project provides an opportunity to complete a fantastic example of the retractable, customizing to your liking, (whether completing an original restoration or a pesto-mod) while secure in the knowledge that the underlying frame and body are solid and will last another 67 years!
