Vehicle Description
While many believe the GTO name was inspired by the Ferrari 250 GTO Gran Tourismo Omologatto, officially the GTO was designated as the Grand Tempest Option. The 1970 was facelifted slightly, but still had the split Endura bumper, now with a boxed center section like the Firebird but with four headlights. The fenders were creased above the wheel wells and the rear bumper and taillights wrapped around the sides.
Why the 400 is so special. Pontiac took a 389 block used in the high-performance Catalina, as well as the Lemans and GTO, and punched it out to an even 400 cubic inches. The result an engine that provided massive amounts of low-end torque and rock steady high RPM power output. The 400 produced 360 horsepower with a Quadrajet single four-barrel.
