I acquired this 2wd, 1971 Ford F250 from a private party in Boise, ID in 1988 and had planned to keep it forever. Years ago I used it to pull a small camp trailer and to haul various loads. The odometer read 108,500 when I bought the truck, and now it’s over 140,000. This Ford pickup with a 4 speed manual transmission is a really nice, clean, non-smoker truck.
My original plan was to eventually pass this truck on to my son. Meanwhile, he bought himself a 2005 Chevy Colorado mid-sized truck, and it had worked just fine for him. Then he purchased a camp trailer and needed a larger truck to pull his new RV. He ended buying a used, fully optioned 2005 Chevy ¾ ton 4wd truck. To help him out, I bought his Colorado.
I don’t need two trucks, and I’m not hauling this and that like I used to. I have decided to keep the smaller Colorado truck and sell my Ford. Someone else will have the opportunity to pick up the mantle and continue the improvements where I left off.
My Ford is the Sport Custom, which was not a heavily optioned truck in its day. I have gradually pecked away at upgrading this truck.
• I repainted it with the original factory two-tone green.
• When I had to truck repainted, we stripped out the old window felt and door gaskets and installed new materials on top of the new paint. It looks sharp.
• I had a retired Ford mechanic install a remanufactured 302 V8 at 138,500 miles on the odometer.
• The clutch was at least 90% when the mechanic installed the remanufactured engine, so we left it in place.
• Other new items: New 4-core radiator, new battery, new starter motor, new water pump with the re-man install, new water heater core, and a new upgraded ignition system.
• We swapped out the 3.73 rear end for a 4.10.
• The front end has recently been redone with new brakes, front wheel bearing pack, etc.
• I have installed new carpeting in the interior. Unfortunately, the sun has faded the black carpet to a dark reddish hue.
• A local upholstery shop reupholstered the front seat.
• We installed a new instrument cluster and turn signal unit.
• Our local detail shop undercoated the chassis.
• The same shop made and installed new door panels.
• A local truck shop did a spray-in bad-liner.
I have made many improvements, but there are things a new owner could do to continue upgrading this ’71 Ford. It needs a new padded dash. My temporary solution was to cover the 49 year-old cracked dash with a dash mat.
The previous owner removed the inside-the-cab gas tank and installed saddle tanks. This Ford could use some dyna-mat against the back wall of the cab for sound deadening. The headliner could also use a redo.
Mechanically, this Ford is set to go another 100,000 miles. An enthusiast could upgrade this vehicle to disk brakes and power steering. When I bought the truck, it came with a funky, old 8 track tape player. I left it in place but removed the speakers. A creative new owner could choose his own head unit and install a new headliner with integrated speakers. I later picked up a factory radio, but I never installed it.
There are three very minor molding and trim defects. The aluminum molding behind the front fender has a small dent. The “D” on the F-O-R-D on the tailgate has a minor ding. Lastly, the left front headlight bezel has some scratches.
Priced very reasonably at $12,785.
