Don't give a Rolex or Cartier when you could give a
1985 ROLLS-ROYCE SPIRIT.
This is my third “proper motorcar” (i.e. Rolls or Bentley} and if you enter into the adventure of owning and maintaining exotics, I strongly suggest joining the Rolls-Royce Owners Club, a fine organization for sharing and for advice. Parts and service can be bothersome, but when you consider what these cars sell for when “pre-owned” as compared to what their price was when new, it is surprising that everyone doesn’t want one.
Okay, so what are this Spirit’s problems? First, the air conditioning. It needs a new compressor, and even though the AC is a common GM Frigidaire system, I have not bothered to replace it since the weather has been cooler. The next item is the front passenger electric window. It is not working at all, but I would guess it has a switch problem as opposed to anything mechanical. Third is the driver side electric seat. It sets the lumbar support, but to move the seat forward and back, one has to look under the cushion and adjust the big screw under there. Hardly convenient. The body is good but has a few paint blisters near the rear window. New shocks, at some point, will be needed on the rear.
Well Gee, what is right with the car? Most importantly, the engine runs quite smoothly, silently, and the GM transmission shifts quietly. I think it could be driven across the country without problems. The gold accents, like the Flying Lady, give the chocolate metalflake paint an outstanding appearance. The radio and cassette player (at least it’s not an 8-Track) work well but not all the speakers seem to be wired in. There is also a 12CD tapedeck in the boot. Woodwork is quite good for a car of this age, as is the leather, carpet, tires - and its low mileage.
Of course, there is no promise, guarantee or warranty with this RR, but we will still love to drive these unique and beautiful vehicles!
