The Good:
The body and frame are very good! This would be an excellent start to a V8 conversion or one could rebuild the original engine and transmission and have a nice FJ62. There are a few small areas of rust on the body (see pictures), but the wheel wells are pretty much rust-free. I rebuilt the front wheels/hubs with new bearings and Marlin Crawler axle seals. I installed new brakes and master cylinder. The engine was replaced with one that has about 150,000 miles on it. It is all sealed up with new gaskets. I even replaced the rear main seal when it was out. I have all the parts I removed and lots of spare parts that go with it and the original engine. Original engine is included.

The Good to Know:
Engine and Transmission- It does start and run, but very rough. You can drive it short distances but it doesn’t shift properly. It is the original transmission so it’s probably time for a rebuild. When I bought it the engine had a rod knock. I ended up buying a used 3FE and installed it. I had never done anything like that so it was quite a learning experience. The engine has never quite ran smoothly. When it first turned over the timing was off so it may be that or something else simple that I just overlooked. I have the original engine that will go with it. It had three spun bearings but everything else looked OK.
To address the shifting issue I installed a new throttle cable but the shifting didn’t improve much.
After doing all the work and taking it for a test drive, when pulling into my driveway smoke started to come into the cabin. I had a small fire in the engine compartment! I had a fire extinguisher handy and put it out quickly but it did melt some of the plastic and rubber bits on the driver’s side of the engine (mostly emissions). It scorched the underside of the hood (see pictures) on that side and I found out there was a rat nest in the hood sound dampener and am still not sure if this was the cause.

After about a year I started up work on it again. I ended up de-smogging the engine, and I replaced all the items that had been damaged that I needed for the de-smogging. I removed the air pump and AC compressor. I still never got it to run well. Suspension is old and worn out. Tires need to be replaced. Driver’s seat has a tear. Passenger window doesn’t work and it’s stuck down about an inch. Auto door locks don’t work. The clear coat is peeling in a few places. Windows are really slow to roll up/down.

Repairs I’ve done:
It had the fuel tank recall completed already. Rear main seal and many other seals/gaskets replaced when engine was installed. All fluids changed: transmission, both front and rear differential, oil, brake, and steering. I did the front axle wheel rebuild kit using Marlin Crawler seals and good Japanese bearings. New belts. Rebuilt the starter (new copper contacts), tune up that included spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and air filter. I replaced all the brake calipers/cylinders, brake shoes/pads, rotors and drums. I bought a donor vehicle that had a good engine/transmission and an okay body with the intention of putting those into this vehicle. But, it drives so well I just couldn’t bring myself to take it apart.
