Maybe you’ve always wanted to buy a Corvette, or maybe you’re just looking for a classic performance car to cruise around in on those clear sunny days. The 1991 C4 (this one) in Torch Red, is the best version of this classic vehicle available under $10k.

For starters, this one is “stone-stock” apart from the exhaust system. With no sketchy after-market parts on the vehicle, you are assured that every time you turn the key the beast lights up. If you want to build a track car out of it, go nuts. We love jumping in and going for a drive with no drama, as and when we want.

Now about that exhaust. Professionally installed, civilized in its noise-making capabilities, this is a Corsa Performance 100% stainless steel thing of beauty. Designed specifically for the L98 engine in this C4, the exhaust adds 14 horsepower, 16 ft. lbs. of torque and 41% of increased airflow. The sound is amazing but not overwhelming, and there is ZERO drone. Plus, the lame rectangular exhaust tips on the original are replaced with dual bright polished tips on each side. They look stunning.

Another low-key but cool addition to this vehicle is the LED headlights. The headlights are pop-up, but the dim, yellow standard 6x9 lamps have been replaced with highly focused and awesomely bright white LEDs. When you see this car coming you have no idea what it is, it looks exotic.

Which brings us to one of the main reasons you want a 1991 and later version of the C4. The original models of the C4 had round taillights with an indented rear bumper, and on the front the side markers were more than a foot back from the front bumper. In 1991 the taillights were switched to rounded squares, the indented rear bumper was fixed by pushing it out at the waistline, and the front markers were wrapped around to the front of the car. Wow! What a difference that made to the car.

We’ve installed LED taillights, with the right flasher relay to ensure everything works as it should. We’ve also replaced the incandescent bulbs in the fog light sockets with LEDs. Use them as daytime running lights, or just use them at dusk for visibility, while the main LED headlights are still retracted.

Moving inside the car, you’re greeted with the post-facelift dash that offers a digital speedo, but analog tach and gauges. This is because Chevy came to their senses after launching the C4 a little over-zealously with an all-digital dash. Look around and you’ll see the wear and tear you’d expect from a 29-year-old vehicle, but for the most part, everything is there and it all works.

Every cruising muscle-car needs a great sound system, and this one has it in spades. The original Bose head unit and speakers have been replaced with a Kenwood head and Infinity speakers. The head supports radio, CD, I-Heart Radio, USB, Aux, Bluetooth, everything. In addition, we’ve added a JBL compact, self-powered subwoofer that not only adds boat-loads of Bass, it also takes the load off the rest of the speakers that only need to handle the “mids” on up. The system sounds amazing, but I recently (clumsily) broke the power antenna, so if I don’t get around to fixing, don’t be surprised.

The tires are Continentals and they are a couple of years old with around 5k miles on them. They’re in perfect shape. A lot of maintenance has been done on the car, mostly preventative rather than after the fact. This includes injectors, brakes, U-joints, various gaskets, hoses, battery, and I even have a brand-new alternator that I was going to install, but the current one’s still working perfectly. It comes with the car, as does a new serpentine belt.

The car gets compliments every time we take it out. It’s not uncommon to have people yell out “Nice C4!” as we’re driving by or stopped at a light. With the right care and maintenance this piece of history will keep going strong and turning heads for many more years to come. And as of 2021, no more tabs as she hits 30 years!
