You will see many SL500s for sale with lower prices. The reason...because many have not received regular maintenance (maintenance records are must) and the majority of the ones I've seen for sale have not had the convertible top hydraulics replaced. On the topic of the convertible hydraulics, MB did not design them to last more than 10-15 years. Every SL made will begin leaking hydraulic fluid regardless of use, and the worst part as a buyer, you cannot easily tell if its leaking without removal of the header or other areas. Furthermore, if you are considering an SL that has had the hydraulics replaced with a set of new MB hydraulics, it will fail again as they never fixed the flaw. Top Hydraulics is the only company (I am aware of) that claims their refurbished hydraulics will last 50 years!

In addition, replacing the canvas top will cost another $1600-$2500, therefore you see why its priced above what you are seeing on Cars.com, AutoTrader and CL. Not to scare you, just be aware and do your research.
During my ownership the following services were performed: an oil change, O2 sensors, oil pan gasket, oil feed tubes, Alternator, windshield washer pump, refurbished sun visors ($500), new headlight surrounds, factory radio antenna, left side marker lamp, replacement of all hydraulic convertible top cylinders (Top Hydraulics-guaranteed for 50 years) and replacement of the hardtop headliner and new OEM floor carpets.
Includes documented service records, with over $20,000 in receipts, and an additional 24 service records highlighted in the accident-free CarFax report, beginning in 1997. Comes with a clean California title.
