Vehicle Description
Does your son want a truck for Christmas? This is the perfect one. It is a 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Dually (dooley, dual wheel, dualy, however the heck you spell it’s got 4 rear wheels) diesel flatbed. It’s got good, bad ,and ugly.
The Good:
It has the Cummins 24 valve pre-DEF diesel with 222,000 miles on it; ( just getting broken in), It has a single cab; ( no riding around with a truckload of buddies), It has a manual 5 speed transmission; (if girlfriend wants to snuggle close she is going to have to learn to shift); It has a new clutch; The cab is in good shape. The seat is in good shape; the all rubber floor mats are in good shape, it has a steel flatbed. It has an underbed tool box on each side. It has a gooseneck hitch in the middle. It has 6 new Yokohama Desert Dueler tires on it. It has new shocks. It has new lower ball joints. It has new brake shoes. The lights are LED. It has a Ranchhand front end replacement. It has a new heater coil and A/C coil. It has good batteries. Fires right up, purrs like a kitten and will run down the road. I just drove it all the way to east Texas and back in one day, pulling the horse trailer you see in the picture. ( For an additional $12,000, you can have it too)
The Bad:
It has a cracked windshield on the drivers side but would pass inspection, or so I was told by a state inspector. It has, I think, a leaking rear wheel brake cylinder and the power steering leaks a bit. The A/C works but may need a charge. It’s noisy enough to warm the cockles of any teenage boy’s heart, and annoy any neighbor. ( but weren’t they all). All the paint is peeled off the wheels so Junior will naturally want to spend his allowance buying cool (read: expensive) rims. The radio works, but the speakers don’t. ( doesn’t matter! He’s Is going to want to install some loud, butt vibrating, sound system in it anyway. It’s 19 years old. Six more years and you can register it as an an antique vehicle.
The Ugly:
If you know anything about Dodges of this era, they had a bad problem with the dash cracking to pieces. I had one guy try to fix it and he made it worse. I had another guy work on it. He took it down to the firewall and put it all back together, got new pieces when he could and fixing the old pieces as he could. The dash is back together, the air blows out of the right vents, the gauges function but I would hardly call it a work of art and it probably still has a few bugs in it. If it had cruise control, it doesn’t work now.
My adult son bought this truck and spent money fixing it up, but his dashboard problem eventually became my dashboard problem and to keep family peace, I bought the truck and fixed the dash and other issues, I now have $10,500 tied up in this truck. I would like to get out of it what I have in it, since I didn’t want it in the first place. The “Texas presumptive value book” wants to tell me it’s worth just shy of $6000 but that doesn’t take into account the flatbed, bumper, new tires, shocks and all the other addons and new parts.
This truck would be the envy of the high-school parking lot. It’s big, it’s muscular, it’s loud, it’s practically indestructible, It’s manly! Who cares if someone runs into it with their big, fancy $75 000 sissy truck? It will be their loss not yours. If Junior is the least bit entrepreneurial or agriculturally minded, this truck will pull that trailer. The truck is located right now near Snyder, but can be brought to Midland.
