Used 2002 Volkswagen Jetta TDI for sale in Santa Rosa, CA
Vehicle Description
I am selling my 2002 Volkswagen Jetta TDI AS IS. It has some issues but in the right hands could be running great without too much fuss. 5-speed manual transmission, power windows, power door locks, interior is in passable shape. 1.9 liter diesel engine generally gets upward of 40 MPG average. 264K miles. The engine runs strong, lots of new stuff:
2017 Fuel filter replaced.
2017 New vacuum lines.
2017 Clutch replaced.
2017 Master/slave cylinders replaced.
2017 Driver side tie rod replaced
2018 Power steering pump replaced.
2018 Passenger side control arm replaced.
2018 Fuel Injection Quantity Adjuster replaced.
Registration good until August 2020, no back fees.
A/C is charged and operational.
Aftermarket CD player with USB connectivity. Speakers are OK.
Seat warmers work.
A bit of bad stuff:
As mentioned above, the driver side half-shaft ($74-$118, O’Reilly) is bad so the car won’t drive.
The driver side wheel bearing ($29-$98, O’Reilly) has repeatedly failed and is probably the cause of the half shaft issue, will also need replaced. Possibly the whole knuckle ($369-$389, O’Reilly) cause it was grinding pretty bad.
The new IQ adjuster needs to be, well, adjusted. I hammer-modded it when I put it in but don’t have VAG-COM so it’s not optimal, some acceleration issues going uphill.
The engine makes a clicking sound but doesn’t seem to affect performance.
Tires are bad (also needs alignment).
Windshield is cracked.
Wipers don’t work.
Can only get in the glove compartment with a screwdriver.
Center console lid won’t stay on.
The sensor in the passenger door doesn’t recognize that the door is shut.
The fuel gauge is inaccurate, and you WILL run out if you aren’t careful.
And the worst part:
The car won’t pass smog as is, not because of any emissions-related issues but because of a check engine light (and because California is ridiculous). The CEL is due to a “Quantity Adjustor High/Low Limit Reached” code, which has to do with the internal workings of the IQ adjustor. I had this problem before and can tell you how to jury rig it to pass smog but I’m washing my hands of the car and don’t want to put forth the effort myself. No guarantees. Like I mentioned, sold AS IS.
So. If you’re into tinkering with diesels you could get this thing running with a little effort. Otherwise it would be a great parts car. It seems like there are a lot of issues but it’s a TDI so the engine will run forever, just the rest of the car will fall apart around it. I’ve listed all the terrible things here upfront because I want full disclosure up front so no one feels cheated. Asking $500 but make me an offer and I’ll probably take it. It’s on the street outside my dad’s house in Santa Rosa and I live an hour away so I’ll only show it if you’re serious.
Oh, and it has a power sunroof. Makes it all worth it.
