Used 2008 A6 Avant (wagon) - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle... for sale in Tualatin, OR

Needs timing chain and power steering pump. AWD, very straight, nice paint, clean black interior. S6 brakes. Upgraded shocks/handling by prior owner. I have owned car for 1 year. Purchased and shipped from PA. Paid too much for the car and cannot justify the investment in the timing chain repair.

Customer reports vehicle starts and runs rough from 130.00 cold start.
Customer reports check engine warning light on dash, warning light is sporadic. May be related to other customer concerns.

Interrogate diagnostic system for faults, read faults: P0345 camshaft position sensor (G163) - malfunction. P0346 camshaft
position sensor (G163). P1388 control module malfunction – throttle monitoring. P1653 check DTC for ABS controller.
Check oil level. Oil level correct. Removed the camshaft position sensor in question and swapped it with the same sensor for bank 1. Cleared faults and started the engine. Found that the engine still had an extended crank when starting. Additionally the same faults for G163 returned. Next - removed the camshaft adjustment solenoid valves for the intake camshafts on both banks and swapped them side to side. Cleared faults again and repeated test. Still had an extended crank and the same faults returned. Lastly checked power, ground and the activation circuit at the connector for the camshaft position sensor G163. Found all three reading their proper specifications. Swapping the sensors eliminates the physical sensor as an issue. Swapping the solenoids eliminates the solenoids as a possible issue. Considering the voltage, signal and ground are correct. This eliminates the wiring and ECM as an issue. Given extended crank when starting, faults stored and rough running condition the issue is with the timing chains or timing components. Timing chains may be stretched or damaged. Timing chains are located on the rear of the engine. Engine and transmission will need to be removed for inspection & repairs. Recommend power steering pump (customer noise complaint) be repaired when the engine is removed. Only recommend removal of engine and transmission if customer wants.
Customer reports the transmission is loud (loud 65.00 obvious noise) and has slow shifting between gears. Customer states this occurs in "D" drive position. Road test confirmed loud noise from engine compartment. Inspect on lift - noise appears to be coming from the power steering pump. Noise occurs in all gears when stationary or in motion. Do no believe the noise heard is related to the transmission. Remove serpentine drive belt which runs the power steering pump, noise went away. Power steering pump will need replacement. Recommend power steering pump replacement when the engine is removed for timing chain repairs.
