We built this van with a few goals in mind. The majority of the time, the van would take us up and down the coast of California surfing from our home base of Ventura with trips up the 395 to mountain bike and climb around Mammoth, June Lake, and Tahoe in between. For two and a half month we’d be living in the van full time as we travelled from Tahoe across Nevada to see family in Colorado before heading north to the sawtooths in Idaho by way of Jackson Hole, WY and Bozeman, MT. We wanted to bring all of the amenities of home with us on our extended road trip while still being able to make short runs up and down the 101 for surf year round.

Our Flatline Van Company low profile roof rack with the front fairing to reduce wind noise is home to two 100 watt solar panels by Renogy and our Fiamma F45S awning.

From the solar panels, power is stored in our Yeti Goal Zero 1000. The Goal Zero houses a 96.8 Ah lithium ion battery, MPPT charge controller, and 1500W (3000W surge) inverter. This unit is responsible for powering our Max Air fan, Isotherm Cruise 130 fridge, sink water pump, outdoor shower water pump, two Sirocco II Elite fans, and LED ceiling lights. The combination of 200 watts of solar on the roof, the 96.8 Ah lithium battery, and extremely efficient 12v appliances listed above results in virtually indefinite power as long as the van receives sun each day. Fast charging from a 25 amp power supply and/or the included 12V car charger keep the battery topped off during foggy/rainy days. The dependability, ease of access to charging ports (USB and 120 AC), self contained nature, and customer support of the Goal Zero makes it a one-stop-shop for supplying power to the van. Boiling water with an electric kettle and making smoothies with our Vitamix are high-draw activities but are easily managed by the Goal Zero.

For cooking, we installed the Dometic R31 oven/range combination. Next door to the oven is our deep Ruvati sink and Pfiester faucet. Water storage for the sink comes in the form of a 5 gallon scepter water jug and drains into a matching grey water storage tank. Both tanks are connected via quick-disconnects with check valves to make removing/filling/draining quick, easy, and dry. The theory here is that it’s imperative for us to be able to fill up with fresh drinking water and consciously manage our grey water responsibly. The deep Ruvati sink lets us easily fill up hydroflasks and camelback bladders in the sink basin. The butcher block counter top is easily extended into the doorway to add room for meal prep.

The Isotherm Cruise 130 fridge runs effortlessly and efficiently off of our Goal Zero battery and keeps a consistent 35 degrees regardless of the temperature inside the van.

Our main hobby is surfing and a hot shower after surfing is a luxury everyone should enjoy. 21 gallons of fresh water are supplied to on-demand propane outdoor shower via 12v pump. Volume of flow to the shower head and heat is adjusted at the water heater. At the highest flow volume, the 21 gallons of water is lasting us 23 minutes of continuous run time. This can be expanded by reducing the flow rate. On the lowest flow rate and the highest heat setting, the shower heats water to a temperature that makes washing dishes a breeze. Washing off our mountain bikes with warm water in the cooler fall temps is another great use for the shower. Filling up the 21 gallon fresh water tank is as easy as connecting any garden hose to the fill valve on the shower face. Storage for changing robes/towels has been built in to the shower unit.

The lowest point of the bed frame is 30” above the floor to allow us to back the 29” tires of our mountain bikes into the van. The full sized bed is bordered by our bedside storage cabinets and overhead cabinets. Between these, the storage below the bench, and the closet above the fridge, storing our clothes and gear securely out of sight is simple. We positioned the Goal Zero 1000 to allow for charging of our phones and computers while still in reach of the bed. Two CR Laurence Co. pill slide windows border each side of the bed. When the Max Air fan is set to pull air out of the van, it pulls air in through each CR Laurance window across the bed – creating a nice cross breeze on warm nights. The Max Air fan does an incredible job of pulling hot air and cooking odors out of the van. Two Sirroco fans help circulate air throughout the van with the rearmost fan moving air around the bed/sleeping area. The fans are on 360 degree gimbals and have three speeds as well as sleep timers.

We built the bench as seating for guests and a way to conceal additional storage. Under the bench is one large storage bin that was designed with our large, climbing rope bag in mind as well as our two person Kelty couch. The other portion of storage houses our cassette toilet. The passenger seat sits on a Scopema swivel brackets and, when turned around, creates a small living room area with seating for three plus additional seating on the bed.
The LED ceiling lights are on a dimmer switch above the entry way to the van. The Max Air fan remote has a home next door to the on/off switch for the sink water pump to make controlling the fan more convenient. Window covers for each window in the van provide complete black-out for sleeping in or preventing light from escaping the van at night.
