Used 98 Honda CRV - Very Reliable for sale in Indianapolis, IN
Vehicle Description
My girlfriend & I have had it for the last 3 years. She has daily driven it the entire time without any failures. Aside from a few little quirks (see below), this car needs NOTHING & is very reliable! The mileage may sound a little high, but it's a Honda. Why are we selling? We bought a new-to-us car. So this must go.
The Good:
- Transmission fluid flushed when we 1st bought it. It shifts like a 90's economy car. No issues though.
- Plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, cap & rotor all replaced when we 1st bought it as well. Believe me it badly needed it.
- Tires replaced 2 years ago. Plenty of tread left. General Altimax's. Recently balanced & rotated.
- Timing service. Water pump, thermostat, etc etc all replaced.
- Synthetic oil change this past spring.
- All brake pads replaced about a year ago.
- A/C, heat, cruise control all work perfectly fine.
- Pioneer stereo head unit. It's pretty basic, but it does the job.
- Brighter HID bulbs put in a month ago.
- Battery was replaced a couple of years ago. Winter took it's toll.
- Anything else that we've needed to do to keep it on the road!
The not so good:
- The all-wheel drive is not currently hooked up. The drive shaft is not rebuild-able & the U-joints started binding. Winter was ending so we just opted to remove it for now. If you want it 4x4 you'll have to buy a new shaft. Sorry.
- Obviously there's some rust. I said it was reliable... Not pretty. The interior is nothing to yell home about either.
- After the engine warms up, this car will flood when you go to start it again. I don't know why, neither does our mechanic. This is apparently something that is not all that uncommon for older Honda's. But fear not! You can bypass this very easily. Simply depress the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor, turn the ignition & it will fire right up. These cars have a built-in "de-flooding" mode. That is the sequence to activate it. This is just something that we've learned to deal with. We can show you how to do it when you come look at it.
- Sunroof has been disconnected & will leak occasionally. We climb up on the roof every so often & seal it up with silicone caulk. I know, it sounds a little ridiculous. But so is the price to fix sunroofs.
- I think this goes without saying - This car has over 200k miles on it, check your fluids. It doesn't have any real issues burning oil or anything like that. But you're still going to need to top things off every once in awhile. I've had vehicle with far lesser mileage that required a lot more attention than this thing does.
- The brake fluid sensor goes off when it gets a little cold out. This is just a sensor issue. It's very sensitive. The sensor may need replaced. We just never did it. The brakes are fine.
- This isn't really an issue but, I would put a cover over that spare tire if we were to keep it. It holds air & has tread but the UV rays are sure to toast it if it stays uncovered. Your call.
As you can see, we maintained this vehicle as it should have been. It was her daily driver & we treated it as such. You could drive this car to California if you wanted to. The "not so good" stuff listed are all things you could safely ignore. If you're looking for something cheap & reliable, a first car, a back-up car, whatever - this will do it.
