We all know how the first hot rods started back pre-WWII . . . West Coast rodders and customizers turning old Model Ts into racing machines. Hopped up, chopped down, and they were soon screaming down dirt roads, open fields and dry lake beds. It didn’t take long for hot rods to turn into an automotive passion that would last through generations.
And, so, we introduce to you a thrilling example of those times: a 1931 Ford Deluxe Hot Rod. The body and hood of this custom fiberglass hot rod were professionally built by Gibbons Motorsports of North Carolina . . . thanks to the superior workmanship of the crew of a former race car team owner. Power? How about a 350 cu in 1987 Corvette V8 and a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission?
This hot rod is everything you could dream of: no extraneous chrome, no door handles and a fine, glossy brown paint job. As with the pared-down exterior, there’s no top, no heater and no radio. It’s all about speed and show.
The restoration took many cool liberties, including a 1932 grille with a billet insert, custom hood ornament, headlights with built-in marker lights, custom leather belts that hold the hood in place and LED recessed taillights. The wheels are Vintiques Steelies— perfect for extra flash.
The interior — from Miracles Upholstery of Portage Lakes, Ohio — features diamond-tufted inserts in black and tan vinyl for an art deco-inspired look. In a nod to modern convenience and comfort, the front seat is adjustable, as is the steering column. All of the dash instruments are restored, working and matching. As for mileage, it’s raring and ready to go, with only 13 miles (yep, just double digits) since its restoration.
This little deluxe hot rod is bound to be a cruise-in favorite. Lean, clean, but what a machine!
