Finished in its factory-correct Fiesta Red and Colonial White, Fords were instantly recognizable with their sweeping chrome trim dividing this two-tone. It's truly a full-length treatment extending from the headlight all the way back to the tail. And we love that artful dip in the door. That's why it's great to find such a complete example like this one. The total effect of all this chrome, and the optional fender skirts, give this coupe the lower, wider, and longer feel that everyone in Detroit wanted back in the day. The jet-inspired touches are seen everywhere from the hood ornament to the afterburner taillights, and the overall classic details go right down to the factory-style hubcaps and whitewalls. So this really loves to put its vintage flair on full display.
Inside, the red returns, and now it's joined by a tasteful dark gray. This completes the full factory-correct color combo, and so the very original style presentation is quite welcomed here. There's more nice details, like how the two wide rows of bench seating have piping that contrasts the gray vinyl and coordinates with the comfy cloth inserts. There are specific elements to a '56 Ford you don't find elsewhere, like the padded dash and recessed gauge package. These are joined by the factory steering wheel with Ford family crest, and even the AM radio is still there for display. It's all designed to give you that nostalgic cruiser feeling.
The Thunderbird badging on the front fender is no accident. Pop the hood and you'll find a quite tidy 292 cubic-inch Y-block V8 motor. That was an optional powerplant that carried the Thunderbird name and was borrowed from Ford's personal cruiser. Topped with a four-barrel carburetor, this is the exact kind of power you expect from a two-tone cruising classic. The motor fires up readily, and it makes a subtly sweet sound out of the dual exhaust. Plus, the column-shifter three-speed manual transmission gives you complete control while also adding to the vintage cool.
