We all love the first-year Mustangs because they launched the icon, but not all of them are created equal. After all, the 2+2 fastback is arguably the one that's in the most demand, and this one has a golden glow that holds close to Champagne Beige. The full execution of the paint and body looks good, but it will never be anything that will make you too nervous to drive this one. And that's a good thing. It has a road-ready GT kind of style with the trumpeted dual exhaust coming out of the rear panel. And the styled steel wheels have a golden finish to harmonize with the paint.
The interior has a distinct and factory-correct Ivy Gold and parchment two-tone. Not only are these cool colors, but also you have the right vintage pieces, like the fold-down rear seats and floor shifter for the three-speed automatic. While this has a full classic look, keen eyes will also spot some very worthwhile upgrades. For example, there's modern Dynamat insulation underneath the carpeting. And the radio is a retro-style unit that has an AM/FM digital tuner. The wood-rimmed steering wheel is mounted on an Ididit tilt column, and that gives you a clear view to the GT-style round gauge package.
We have plenty of receipts documenting over $25k invested in this coupe over the last few decades, and the engine bay has been a big benefit of this. The 289 cubic-inch V8 was rebuilt in 2002. It's now upgraded with features a Holley four-barrel carburetor, HEI distributor w/Taylor Pro wires, and a serpentine belt system. It fires up nicely, and makes a sweet tune out of the newer dual exhaust. And don't just listen to those pipes; follow them in the undercarriage photos. There's where you'll spot a clean look of even more investment. This includes a Heidts tubular A-arm front end, tubular frame bracing, and a Heidts four-link rear with adjustable coilovers and heavy duty sway bar. You'll spot even more nice upgrades, like a Ford 9-inch rear that was rebuilt in 2014, power front disc brakes, modern BF Goodrich Comp T/A tires, and rack & pinion power steering.
