Nothing says the 1970s better than this double-creamy presentation with the factory-correct Sandalwood paint and coordinating hue of vinyl roof. But look at this one a bit closer. The paint has an amazing luster that highlights the subtle curves of this large personal coupe. It's part of an investment later in life, and the total effect is a period-correct presentation with a shine better than the factory ever could. More than just the paint, this final-year first-generation Toronado is a desirable car. It has many of the earlier years' design cues, like the distinct wheel covers and a bright chrome rear bumper that integrates into the overall design. But the front end was revised this year, and it's the only time this gen was built without hidden headlights (and that means a cool style that's easy to maintain.) Plus, we love the history of this one. It is believed to come from a garage-kept collection, and the low odometer is even believed to reflect actual mileage. In fact, it's a local car that was said to have first sold new less than an hour from our showroom.
Inside, the Toronado was all about offering luxuries for both rows of seating. The front-wheel drive gave it a flat floor for the whole carload to stretch out their legs. But up front was still where all the best features were. The front bench has an armrest to separate this into individual bucket-like comfort. This has a highly original setup, right down to the working courtesy lights. And you'll appreciate stock items on display like the Olds AM/FM radio and factory A/C controls (they will need servicing to function again.) Plus, the power windows mean you never have to leave the driver's seat to show off the full pillarless hardtop profile.
Under the hood is the 455 cubic-inch V8. This has a well-preserved and correct presentation, right down to the metallic blue on the block. This era-correct block is even believed to be original to the car. The Super Rocket makes some of the best power of the era thanks to the big size and a four-barrel carburetor on top. And the way this fires up and runs reaffirms a life of proper care so far. Plus, the three-speed automatic transmission is a smooth shifter that continues this coupe's luxury feeling. And with power steering, power brakes, and front discs, this is really an effortless anytime classic.
