Also known at the Trekker, the Safari, or simply the Type 181, the VW was only called the Thing in North America. It was built on the same chassis as the 1968 Microbus and was propelled by VW’s air-cooled 1600cc flat-four. A four-speed transmission was the only transmission. Debuting in North America in 1973 unfortunately the VW’s 15 minutes of fame was short-lived as tightened regulations forced VW to stop importation after the 1974 model year. Only about 25,000 examples were imported and even though its still an unusual car in today’s standard, people love it.

This 1974 Volkswagen Thing was reportedly refurbished from the previous owner with a repaint, new upholstery and carpeting, brake and suspension refreshment, and more. The Thing was finished in orange over a black interior and equipped with a removable black hardtop, 15” EMPI BRM Speeddwell wheels, and an aftermarket radio. According to a previous listing, the glass, weather stripping, and right front fender were replaced under previous ownership. Silver and Black 15” EMPI BRM Speedwell wheels wrapped in Otani EK1000 tires, date stamped in 2019 were installed by the previous seller. The brake shoes, drums, master cylinder, shock absorbers, wheel cylinders, tie rod ends, CV joints, upper and lower ball joints, and sway bar bushings are also said to have been replaced by the previous seller. The interior features a dash paint matched to the orange body, black carpet, rubber floor mats, and black reupholstered seats. An aftermarket radio and a glovebox door were also fitted. The dual-port 1,600cc flat-four was installed under prior ownership and sends power to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. Various maintenance has said to be done by the previous seller. The current owner has owned the car since April of 2020 and has only added about 300 miles.
