Two years of research into the custom automobile market revealed that the builder/purchaser demographics for classic cars like the ’32 Ford five window, the ‘36 Chevrolet, the ’50 Mercury or the ’55 Chevrolet - - cars consistently in the top ten street rods of all time lists - - are growing older and dying. These builders and buyers have been used to restoration or remodeling of the original vehicles. This usually led to varying stages of customization and always resulted in vehicles that were rarely driven. Why? Because restoration of these classics left the driver with drum brakes, carburetors, and steering columns that would kill you in a crash. While restored and customized classics could be modernized, this usually came about because of add-ons and aftermarket cobbling.
Younger enthusiasts and purchasers of one-off customized automobile art insist on higher levels of modernization, safety and handling characteristics in their custom vehicles. This is clearly evidenced on the many television shows devoted to the custom car as a work of art.
