Fun Runabout: I bought this several years ago. The previous owner had tried to restore it but lost the will short of the finish line. I have no interest in restorations but wanted to drive it-and I have. It's a lot of fun. It's easy to work on and fun to tinker with (you will be tinkering). If you've ever wanted to own a classic convertible, Triumph parts are not hard to come by and are relatively inexpensive. There is an entire community ready to help.
Restoration: It's a great candidate and you can enjoy it while you do so. Solid car. Good bones. When inspected in August, the mechanic noted that the frame was completely solid. You'll be undoing some of the things I did (electrical!) but it will be worth it.
Either option, know that you'll be tinkering, but the entry point is easy as the engine and overall car is pretty basic.
Electrical system: I have replaced the electrical system. It is not British and was done by an amateur (me). British cars are pretty unreliable and their electrical systems are at the heart of that.
Soft top: I replaced it with a cheap vinyl top that never quite fit. The plastic windows cracked and the stitching came undone. I sewed it up to keep the rain at bay, but you can see it's not pretty. Good for driving, I clip a tarp over it when it sits on rainy days.
Body: The previous owner, in trying to restore it, did a horrible job with the paint. It bubbled and water gets under the bubbles. It rotted out the rocker panels, which are patched with pop rivets. Same with the pans in front of the seats. It works for fun driving and inspection, but restoration will see you doing some work here.
Miscellaneous: Some of the switches are old. The latch to open the driver's door snapped off the other day. The horn has a button on the dash instead of the wheel. The alternator is not a Triumph's (but matches) and it has a modern fuse box. The seats are fallen, which works for me (I'm 6'4" and would be too tall, otherwise). It's quirky, which you'll enjoy or need to make your own.
I enjoyed working on it more than I do driving it and, at this point, it just needs tinkering to keep it going or a full restoration if you're into that (I've moved on to a salvage job VW Bug).
Four speed with overdrive. The odometer has been stuck since I bought it, but I can't imagine more than 2,000 miles on it since I put it on the road years ago. I'm a fair weather driver and it mostly was to-from work. The speedometer is accurate within a few mph.
